What Changes to Facebook Pages Mean to Hoteliers and Restaurateurs
Today Facebook announced changes to brand pages. While brands will have some time to get their pages together before everything is switched over, you should start thinking about your changes now. Just like personal pages, all brand pages will be getting the Timeline look, feel and functionality. So what does this mean for you? Here are my top takeaways but as I learn more I will continue to update.
1. There is no more landing page. In the past, you were able to set up a custom landing page for first time visitors. Now, everyone lands on the same page so your page needs to speak to both new visitors and old fans. Pay special attention to your cover photo and change it often, based on the season or your promotions. I’m still playing around with mine and trying to figure out what works best given the size and shape. I’m thinking we will display customer logos there but kicking around a couple ideas. I imagine a new crop of graphic designers will specialize in Cover Photo art.
2. You now have the ability to pin an update to the top of your page. This is a great way to ensure that a key message doesn’t get lost in your daily updates. (To set the pin hover over an update and click the star.
3. Before, you had a column on the left with links to your page’s applications. Now, you will be limited to 3 visible tabs (plus photos and your Like count), displayed in boxes, and the rest will be in a drop-down. So think about what applications are most important to you. If you have a booking engine, you will want that one for sure. But think carefully about what your fans need easy access to and check your analytics to see what what your visitors want to access.
4. You now have the ability privately message people. If you’re using Revinate and find mentions of your hotel or restaurant through Social Media Searches, you now have a great tool to reach out. But do so with caution as many people likely don’t realize that their page is set to public. Private messages will also allow you to take engagement off your page, which should help it appear less cluttered.
We will be working on our page over the next couple of days to see what works for us. Please do the same and let us know anything that you think will work well.
