Effective use of QR codes for hotels

Using quick response (QR) codes is a great way to share information with your mobile guests. QR codes can drive online traffic from printed materials and signage. Following are some great uses of QR codes in the hospitality industry:

  1. A QR code at the bottom of your guest folio can drive guests directly to TripAdvisor to write a review of your property.
  2. A QR code on the room key can provide your guests with information about local events, restaurant options or even jogging paths by the hotel.
  3. A QR code by the concierge can provide guests with local attractions and must-hit restaurants.

Implementing QR codes is easy and can be an effective traffic driver, assuming you follow the steps below:

  1. Decide on your call-to-action. Scanning a QR code will only drive traffic to one unique URL, so make sure the landing page is exactly where you want your guests to engage with you and won’t require additional browsing. If your goal is, for example, for a guest to write a review on a review site, choose a URL that sends users straight to your property’s Write a Review field and not simply your business listing.
  2. Use a URL-shortener before generating. Before you begin using a QR generator, be sure to shorten your destination URL. QR code generators are sensitive to the length of the URL and will produce a more complex, harder to scan code the longer the URL is. If you have access to Revinate, you can shorten your URL straight from our dashboard. If you’re not yet a Revinate customer, try Bit.ly, which is another option.
  3. Create your QR code. There are dozens of free QR code generators available – QR Stuff, goQR.me, and QR Code Generator, to name just a few. Once you select your generator, all you have to do is submit your URL and save the image file that is generated.
  4. Test the code. In order to scan a QR code, you’ll need to download a QR code scanner app for your mobile device. There are many free apps available for both iPhone and Android devices. It’s critical that you test on both devices before moving to print.
  5. Work with your print designer. While you’ll have a singular QR code image file to work with, you’ll need to coordinate with your printer to ensure that the QR codes are sized appropriately for each piece of collateral. This process can be complicated, but following this sizing guide will make the job far less daunting. Test the codes once more before final print.
  6. Track your QR code traffic. By using a URL-shortener, you can determine the number of website visits you are generating from your QR codes. You should also measure what kind of overall impact QR codes are making on your website’s mobile traffic numbers. Use your web analytics tool (e.g. Google Analytics, Omniture, etc.) to get this information.
