Heroes don’t wait for revenue. They capture it.
The biggest revenue opportunities aren’t always the ones you can see.
Sometimes they’re hiding in compressed booking windows. Sometimes they’re sitting behind a ringing phone. Sometimes they’re waiting for demand to peak while everyone else is racing to fill rooms.
This month, we’re exploring where hotels are leaving revenue on the table and how the highest-performing teams are capturing every opportunity instead. We’re investigating what it takes to capture revenue when an opportunity appears. And we’re discovering the moments when revenue opportunities are most likely to be missed.
Numbers that matter
The World Cup proved occupancy isn’t the only number that matters
The 2026 World Cup created a surprising performance story for hotels: More demand did not always mean higher occupancy. Across all 16 U.S. host cities, occupancy declined 10 to 16 percentage points year over year, while ADR increased 50% to 85% in many markets. The takeaway? Filling every room is not always the goal. The hotels that performed best were the ones that understood demand, protected their rates, and made strategic revenue decisions.

Why it matters for hoteliers
The World Cup gave hoteliers a real-world reminder that occupancy is only one piece of the revenue puzzle.
A full hotel might look like success, but selling every room at the wrong price can leave revenue on the table. The strongest revenue strategies are built around understanding demand, knowing when guests are willing to pay more, and making confident decisions about inventory and pricing.
This matters far beyond major events. Every day, hotels balance rate strategy, guest demand, and changing booking behavior. The question is no longer just “How do we fill our rooms?” It is “Which guests are we trying to attract, and what value are we creating for them?”
The hotels that win are the ones using data to understand the bigger picture, not just chasing occupancy numbers.
What’s Revinate’s take?
Great revenue decisions start with knowing your guests.
Data helps hotels understand who is booking, what motivates their stays, and how to create experiences that turn one-time visitors into loyal guests. Revenue optimization is not just about maximizing a single transaction. It is about building a smarter, more connected guest strategy that drives long-term value.
The future belongs to hotels that use data to move from reactive decisions to proactive ones.
Trends that matter
Your next direct booking opportunity might be hiding in an OTA search
OTAs are getting the first click. That doesn’t mean they’re getting the final booking.
More travelers are starting their hotel search on OTAs, with 26% beginning on Booking.com compared to 21% starting on search engines. But the direct booking opportunity is far from disappearing. In fact, 18% of OTA researchers still go on to book directly with a hotel, a 3.3 percentage-point increase year over year.
The guest journey may start somewhere else, but hotels still have the chance to earn the relationship, capture the booking, and build loyalty before checkout.

Why it matters for hoteliers
The guest journey is no longer a straight path from search to booking.
Travelers might discover your hotel on an OTA, compare options across multiple channels, read reviews, and then visit your website before making a decision. That means every interaction is an opportunity to build trust and turn a researcher into a direct guest.
The mistake is assuming that OTA visibility means losing the relationship. The real opportunity is understanding how guests move through the booking journey and creating experiences that encourage them to choose direct.
Hotels that rely only on one channel are missing the bigger picture. Strong direct revenue strategies are built by understanding guest intent, creating relevant experiences, and staying connected throughout the decision-making process.
What’s Revinate’s take?
The guest journey may be changing, but one thing remains constant: relationships drive revenue.
Every search, website visit, inquiry, and booking interaction gives hotels a chance to better understand their guests. When hotels use those insights to create more personalized experiences, they move beyond competing on price and start building stronger connections that bring guests back.
